A 40-Year Dialogue Between Father and Son

This is Hang Tam’s tenth photobook and a deeply personal handmade publication.

The project began when Tam discovered photographs taken by his late father in Kwun Tong (formerly “Kwun Tong / 官塘”) during the 1970s. By coincidence, forty years later in the 2010s, Tam himself had documented the same district just before large-scale redevelopment reshaped the area.

The number “40” marks both the time gap between the two bodies of work and a symbolic turning point in the artist’s own life. The book becomes a cross-generational collaboration—a conversation across time between father and son.

A Box of Living History

More than a printed volume, the work is conceived as a tactile archive:

  • Box size approximately 96mm x 70mm x 45mm

  • 65 photographic prints

  • Reproductions of 1970s Kwun Tong rental receipts

  • A vintage map

  • A piece of fabric

  • Letters in Chinese and English

Each edition rearranges images and poetic captions differently, reinforcing the openness of memory and interpretation.

The title—It really is Kwun Tong ?—expresses both disbelief and longing. Faced with the district’s transformation after 2022, the question resonates as a shared reflection between two generations confronting irreversible urban change.

About Tang Tam

Hang Tam is a Hong Kong photographer and maker of handmade photobooks. His practice centers on urban transformation, collective memory, and overlooked everyday spaces.

By combining photography with archival materials, objects, and experimental book structures, Tam transforms the photobook into a tactile vessel of time—where memory can be physically handled, reordered, and rediscovered.
