Photographed by Hong Kong photographer Rensis Ho, the book presents a side of Ryuichi Sakamoto beyond the international music icon: a gentle, reserved, and contemplative intellectual.
In a studio without a predetermined script, the Professor gazes calmly into the lens, reclines freely, and even interacts with the photographer’s pet dog. Moments of quiet reflection—resting his chin in thought or brushing back his hair—form the emotional “punctum” of the images. This is not Sakamoto on stage, but his most authentic self in a winter day in Hong Kong in 1998.
The design draws inspiration from the cover of Sakamoto’s 1997 album Discord, originally created by renowned Japanese designer Hideki Nakajima. After Nakajima’s passing in 2022, the cover of this book was designed by Hong Kong designer Benny Au—both echoing the visual language of Discord and serving as a tribute to a departed friend.
