Marcel Heijnen
Marcel Heijnen is a Dutch photographer, designer, and musician who has called Asia home for over three decades. Now dividing his time between Amsterdam and Hong Kong, Heijnen’s work is driven by a deep-seated curiosity about the "human-scale" rhythms of urban life and the quiet persistence of tradition within rapidly modernising cities.
While his creative output spans multiple disciplines, Heijnen is perhaps best known for his long-running photography project documenting the cats of China's largest cities. What began as a chance encounter with a shop cat in Hong Kong in 2015 evolved into a global phenomenon, documenting the symbiotic relationship between humans and felines in the traditional trades of Asia.
Heijnen’s lens does not merely capture animals; it maps the cultural heritage of city pockets, from the apothecary stores of Hong Kong to the shikumen of Shanghai. His style blends documentary precision with an artist’s eye for geometry and light, often challenging the viewer to find the subject camouflaged within the dense, textured details of the urban landscape.
A self-taught artist in many respects, Heijnen’s photography often explores themes of impermanence and the "residue" of the past. His work has been featured globally in publications such as The Guardian, CCTV, and Al Jazeera, and is held in private collections worldwide.
躲猫猫 Hide-and-Seek, China’s City Cats
(Book Launch at Blue Lotus Gallery, May 24, 2026)
Blue Lotus Gallery presents Hide-and-Seek (躲猫猫), a definitive new collection by Dutch photographer and artist Marcel Heijnen. Featuring a comprehensive monograph alongside three dedicated city-specific volumes, it marks the culmination of his long-standing fascination with the feline residents that navigate the ever-shifting landscapes of China’s major cities.
Since 2015, Marcel Heijnen has traversed nearly twenty Chinese cities, documenting the lived-in reality of Hong Kong’s traditional trade districts, the communal courtyards of Shanghai’s shikumen, and the enduring residential pockets of Guangzhou. Rather than seeing these spaces as mere relics, Heijnen captures them as active, functioning ecosystems where cats are integral to the social fabric. His lens documents these felines as the "kings and queens" of their domains: ancestral halls, active construction sites, and the small-scale retail hubs that form the backbone of local neighbourhoods.

After the viral success of Hong Kong Shop Cats a decade ago, a long-awaited sequel has finally been published—this time turning the lens toward China’s urban felines. Blue Lotus Gallery is proud to present Hide & Seek, China’s City Cats (躲猫猫), a new series by Dutch photographer Marcel Heijnen. Comprising a comprehensive China edition alongside three city-specific volumes, the brandnew 4 books mark the culmination of Heijnen’s enduring fascination with the feline inhabitants who navigate the ever-shifting landscapes of China’s major cities.

Photographer’s Statement
Cats are, of course, the protagonists of these images. Yet at times, these furry little creatures also serve as “icebreakers” that anchor a scene — giving me a reason to smile at shop owners and exchange a few words before pressing the shutter. In China, such an opening often leads to a warm invitation: “Come, sit down and have a cup of tea.” In this way, those fleeting moments continue to live vividly beyond the frame.
Hide-and-Seek: The Monograph
The anchor of this collection is its eponym, Hide-and-Seek (躲猫猫), a large-format monograph that serves as a ten-year visual archive of Marcel Heijnen’s travels through nearly twenty Chinese cities. This volume is structured into three thematic chapters that categorise the feline's role within the changing urban landscape:
Together (在一起): Documents the daily interactions and shared lives of residents and cats.
Being (在): A study of the cat’s physical presence and form.
Being Together (一起在): Situates the feline within its wider architectural context, from temples to construction sites.
Alongside the images are original verses by renowned Chinese poet Tan Jiongcheng (谈炯程). His brief, evocative lines create an intertextual dialogue with the photographs, linking the fleeting moments captured on film to the city's deeper emotional and cultural rhythms.

A Record of Transition
Ultimately, this collection serves both as a tribute to the cats as permanent fixtures of the street—unassuming threads of continuity within a changing landscape—and as a record of a country in transition. By focusing on the "human-scale" life found in older neighbourhoods, Heijnen maps the local heritage and community rhythms that persist alongside rapid modern development, resulting in a compelling, decade-long study of China's urban landscapes seen through the eyes of its most observant inhabitants.
