Thomas Gust: A Unique Artistic Approach to Hong Kong

During his stay in Hong Kong throughout 2023 and 2024, German artist Thomas Gust embarked on an intensive photographic journey, seeking to carve out a visually distinct perspective on a city already extensively documented. His work represents a striking fusion of photography and fine art, where traditional techniques meet processes of abstraction and manual intervention, such as overpainting. This approach does not merely transform his photographs; it infuses them with a unique aura and texture, allowing them to retain their photographic identity while transgressing the traditional boundaries of the medium.

Gust draws significant inspiration from Romanticism, specifically the art-historical compositions of early 19th-century European painting. He integrates motifs such as trees and floral arrangements set against Hong Kong’s iconic skyline. These Romantic elements, paired with expressive overpainting, offer a contemporary reinterpretation of both the urban landscape and the photographic form.

In the spring and summer of 2023, Gust began experimenting with smaller prints, using overpainting as a meditative practice. Influenced by the works of Fan Ho and Japanese woodblock prints, this experimentation matured into a rigorous artistic process. For certain motifs, he developed this technique into "striped images," informed by Japanese and Chinese calligraphy. These works—available as individual stripes or diptychs—utilise bold vertical compositions to extract entirely new artistic expressions from his original frames.

Gust’s works are typically presented in portrait orientation, with a sheet size of 40 x 60 cm. Each piece is mounted in a mount (or passe-partout), ensuring the viewer’s focus remains undisturbed. His work is produced in strictly limited editions of three prints per motif; however, due to the manual overpainting, each print remains a unique original. Additionally, a single Artist’s Proof (AP) is reserved for the artist’s archive.

Thomas Gust’s ability to merge photography with fine art techniques results in a body of work that is as visually compelling as it is conceptually rich. His approach reimagines Hong Kong’s urban and natural topography while challenging conventional definitions of the photographic medium.

“…It’s an everlasting personal romance, that I have with Hong Kong.”
