About this photo:
In this photograph an old fishing boat is depicted against the background of modern Hong Kong.
Victoria Harbour, located in Hong Kong, has a long history of fishing dating back to the early days of the city's development. In the mid-19th century, fishing was a major industry in Hong Kong, with hundreds of fishing boats operating in Victoria Harbour and the surrounding waters.
During the 20th century, the fishing industry in Victoria Harbour underwent significant changes due to urbanization and industrialization. The construction of the Victoria Harbour Reclamation project in the 1950s and 1960s led to the loss of many of the traditional fishing grounds, and pollution from industrial and urban sources had a negative impact on fish populations.
Despite these challenges, fishing continued to be an important activity in Victoria Harbour, with small-scale fishermen using traditional techniques to catch a variety of fish, including grouper, snapper, and shrimp. In recent years, the government has implemented measures to protect fish stocks and promote sustainable fishing practices in the harbour.
Today, fishing in Victoria Harbour is mainly recreational, with local residents and tourists enjoying the opportunity to fish for fun or to participate in fishing competitions. The harbour is also home to a number of seafood restaurants, where visitors can enjoy fresh seafood caught in the waters of Victoria Harbour.
Keith Macgregor has been photographing Hong Kong for nearly 50 years. He documented Hong Kong since the economic boom period of the 70s, a time of immense prosperity, social development and general optimism. Nearing the end of its status as a British colony, many photographs depict a fascinating time where the visual contrast between British and Chinese culture, as well as what could be described as the old and the new, was still immensely visible and played into what made the city dynamic yet still mystical in nature.
Keith Macgregor
