Michael Kistler
Kistler, who originally hails from Minneapolis, began his photography journey at the age of 18 when he was faced with unfamiliar surroundings in Europe. Armed with a compact Ricoh film camera, he embarked on a series of travels before eventually settling in Tokyo where he started a family and spent a decade exploring and honing his unique style of abstract photography that captures movement. In 2014, Kistler relocated with his family to Hong Kong, where he continued to pursue his passion for street photography. He currently resides in Singapore.
Kistler's talent as a street photographer is evident in the way he captures the essence of urban life. His work is characterized by a unique blend of abstraction and realism, which he achieves by using a combination of long exposures, camera movement techniques or in-camera double exposures. This allows him to create images that are simultaneously blurred and sharp, capturing both the motion and stillness of the city.
Kistler's photographs are not just aesthetically pleasing; they also tell a story. Each image is a snapshot of a moment in time, a glimpse into the lives of the people who inhabit the bustling streets of Hong Kong. Through his work, Kistler has created a unique visual language that is at once poetic and gritty, intimate and universal. His photographs invite us to see the world through his eyes, to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the urban landscape, and to recognize the humanity that binds us all.
It is no surprise that Kistler has gained a reputation as one of the most talented street photographers in Hong Kong. His work has been exhibited widely both in Hong Kong and around the world including, New York, Astoria, Minneapolis, London, Dublin, and Porto. Kistler's passion for street photography is evident in his regular workshops, where he shares his knowledge and expertise with aspiring photographers. His ability to teach and inspire others is a testament to his deep understanding of the craft and his commitment to the art form.

About BLINK852, a solo exhibition at Blue Lotus Gallery (November 2020)
In cities, there are countless unnoticed moments of unexpected beauty that occur in the blink of an eye, existing briefly but then gone forever. The medium of street photography exists to both capture and play with these fleeting fractions of seconds where the drama of everyday life plays out and blends with the complex web of the human metropolis.
With over half the world's population living in urban areas, a figure constantly growing, combined with the exploding accessibility to smartphone cameras, it is no wonder Street Photography is one of the most popular genres of photography today. However, achieving success within the art form is extremely challenging.
A street photographer is both an observer and a hunter, seeking out these elusive moments like trophies. It requires patience to capture these moments, and compiling a cohesive body of work excelling with a unique style and vision often takes a lifetime.
While Street Photography has long been associated with black and white images, such as those shot by Cartier-Bresson, Winogrand, Moriyama and Fan Ho, Kistler prefers shooting Hong Kong in color. A city so intense and highly saturated with its dazzling lights, alongside bright ads and racing traffic, it flashes intense colors at its inhabitants relentlessly. Kistler’s favorite subjects include a textured blend of street art and architecture with the blurred movement of Hong Kong's iconic taxis, buses, trams, and the day-to-day hustle of people.
In addition to the chaos, Hong Kong is famous for its shiny and reflective skyscrapers, and Kistler seeks out these mirrored reflections in glass and puddles. Layers play an important role in his work, and if not naturally present on the street, he frequently opts to create in-camera double exposures to realize his vision. This kaleidoscopic effect echoes the experience of moving around the metropolis while being bombarded by noise, motion, and reflected light. It is worth noting that Kistler uses no photoshop or digital manipulation in his images- everything is done in-camera with minor edits in post-processing.
BLINK 852, Kistler's project, deliberately hints at the DIY punk attitude of ignoring rules and always experimenting with the medium without being too pretentious. Learning by doing is one of Kistler's philosophies, which he shares in his many photography workshops. You may see him walking around town with his skateboard and camera in tow, as he encourages his students to notice all the small things.
Street photography is a celebration of the beauty found in the mundane moments of everyday life. It is a way of seeing the world through a unique lens and capturing the essence of our urban landscapes. Kistler's work, with its vibrant colors, layered compositions, and unique perspectives, offers a fresh take on the genre and reminds us to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us every day.
