Blue Lotus Gallery presents Fan Ho – Hong Kong Symphony, on view from 23 October 2026 to 29 March 2027. Opening alongside the release of the new publication Hong Kong Symphony, the exhibition returns to Fan Ho’s photographs of Hong Kong and the particular visual language through which he observed the city in the 1950s and 1960s.
Fan Ho’s photographs are among the most recognisable images of post-war Hong Kong. He photographed streets, markets, rooftops, harbour fronts, alleyways, and backlit passages with a sharp sense of timing and composition, finding drama in ordinary movement and atmosphere in everyday light. His pictures are carefully structured, but never static; they hold the density, motion, and changing texture of a city in transformation.
Rather than presenting Fan Ho’s work in isolation, Hong Kong Symphony places it in conversation with its wider photographic moment. Alongside his photographs, the exhibition includes selected vintage works by other Hong Kong photographers of the same generation, offering a broader view of the salon culture and image-making environment in which his work emerged. Seen in this context, Fan Ho appears not only as a singular eye, but also as part of a larger photographic scene that shaped the visual identity of mid-century Hong Kong.
The exhibition is presented in parallel with the publication Hong Kong Symphony, which brings together Fan Ho’s photographs of the city in book form. Together, the exhibition and publication offer an opportunity to look again at a body of work that continues to shape how Hong Kong’s past is remembered and imagined.

Hong Kong Symphony is a new publication by Blue Lotus Editions dedicated to master photographer Fan Ho. Featuring more than 100 photographs, the book offers a lyrical journey through post-war Hong Kong as seen through Fan Ho’s unmistakable eye.
Known for his dramatic use of light and shadow, striking geometry and deep human sensitivity, Fan Ho transformed the city’s streets, alleys, rooftops and harbour fronts into timeless visual compositions.
With an essay by Sarah Van Ingelgom, the book explores the musical quality of Fan Ho’s work — its rhythm, silence, crescendo and emotional depth. Like a symphony, his photographs move between darkness and light, solitude and connection, melancholy and hope.
"Hong Kong Symphony" invites readers to experience Fan Ho’s Hong Kong as a visual composition: poetic, resonant and unforgettable.
