Modern Shanghai is an urban odyssey spanning a decade by photographic artist Chen Ronghui. Inspired by scholar Leo Ou-fan Lee’s seminal work on Shanghai’s modernity, Shanghai Modern: The Flowering of a New Urban Culture in China, Chen adopts a detached and objective gaze.
His work captures the city’s intricate tapestry where old meets new and East greets West. With sharp sensitivity, he registers the everyday existence and subtle emotions of ordinary individuals within the metropolis. Through artificial landscapes, intimate spaces, and street-level realities, the series critiques consumerism and urban modernization, unveiling the obscured truths and everyday life beneath the glamorous surface.

Chen Ronghui is a Chinese photographer currently based in Shanghai and New Haven. His work focuses on different dimensions of China’s urbanization and industrialization. He has published two photobooks, Freezing Land, and Land of Ambitions, and exhibited both in China and internationally. He has won a number of awards including the World Press Photo; BarTur Photo Award; Three Shadows Photography Award & AlPA special prize and Hou Dengke Documentary Photography.
陳榮輝是一位中國攝影師，現居於上海與紐黑文。他的創作聚焦於中國城市化與工業化進程中的多重面向。曾出版兩本攝影集《凍土》與《野心之地》，並於中國及國際多地展出。他曾獲多項重要獎項，包括世界新聞攝影獎（World Press Photo）、BarTur Photo Award、三影堂攝影獎及 AlPA 特別獎，以及侯登科紀實攝影獎。
