Join us for a conversation with @streetsignhk founders Kevin Mak and Ken Fung, as they share the stories behind a special selection of Hong Kong neon signs.

The discussion will explore how these signs were made, why they were commissioned, the businesses and communities behind them, and the recent conservation efforts led by various organisations to preserve this important part of Hong Kong’s visual culture.

Hong Kong’s neon signs were once more than just shop advertisements; they were the very heartbeat of the city. They defined our skyline, coloured our rain-slicked streets, and etched themselves into our collective memory. But as the skyline changes, how do we hold onto that light?

At Blue Lotus Gallery, we are currently exploring this question through two different lenses. First, the visual legacy: Keith Macgregor’s City of Lights exhibition.
His photographs capture the golden age of Hong Kong’s neon, preserving the atmosphere of the city in all its beautiful nostalgia.
Many of the signs he photographed have long since disappeared, but the story doesn't end there.

On 16 August, we are hosting @streetsignhk, a local platform that has been on the front lines of sign conservation since 2017. Architects Kevin Mak and Ken Fung actively rescue, exhibit, and reimagine these signs for the modern city, preserving a vital piece of urban heritage for the generations to come.

This session looks at the future of neon. Join us to hear firsthand stories from the field: the grit of rescue operations, bringing disappeared signs back to the public through various exhibitions, and how they are keeping the craft of neon alive in a changing urban landscape.

@streetsignhk has long focused on documenting and preserving the unique “signboard streetscape” of Hong Kong. The team actively rescues neon and shop signs facing demolition. To date, they have preserved over 200 signboards from more than 150 local shops. Through exhibitions, installations, and design initiatives, they reimagine the possibilities of neon craftsmanship.

Whether you love Keith Macgregor’s photography or are passionate about local heritage, join us to explore both sides of this important story!

About @streetsignhk

@streetsignhk is a conservation platform dedicated to researching, preserving, and reinterpreting Hong Kong’s signboard culture. Since its founding in 2017, the team has built a growing archive of local signage through rescue operations, and dedicated to promote sign-related craft and culture promotion through exhibitions, installations, and cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Their work goes beyond conservation. Through modular design neon systems, educational outreach, and public art experiments, they explore ways for neon craftsmanship to continue evolving within contemporary urban contexts—allowing this fading visual language to find new life.

Blue Lotus Gallery presents City of Lights, a newly published volume by blue lotus editions featuring the photography of Keith Macgregor. The book brings together selected works from Macgregor’s extensive archive, captured throughout the 1990s and 2000s, immersing viewers in Hong Kong after dark — a city ablaze with colour, reflection, and electric atmosphere.

Drawn directly from the publication, selected photographs will be presented in a major accompanying exhibition at the gallery. Together, the book and exhibition spotlight Macgregor’s enduring engagement with Hong Kong’s neon streetscapes.

Yet this vibrant scene is steadily disappearing. As neon signs are dismantled and familiar streetscapes fade, City of Lights becomes more than a celebration; it is a vital archive. The publication preserves a visual culture that once shaped Hong Kong’s identity after dark, safeguarding memories that are otherwise slipping away.

City of Lights offering collectors an opportunity to preserve Hong Kong’s neon legacy within a personal collection. The book stands as both tribute and testament: a radiant record of a vanishing era.
