Sunday Event on September 6
Opening a Treasure Box of Memories:
Kwun Tong, Telephone Booths, and Hong Kong Stories
Book Signing Event with Hang Tam
📅 Date: Sunday, September 6, 2026
🕒 Time: 3:00–5:00 PM
📍 Venue: Blue Lotus Gallery
28 Pound Lane, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
(All are welcome to attend)
Many photographers represented by Blue Lotus Gallery have taken Hong Kong as the central subject of their work. These include Fan Ho, whose street scenes captured the city in the 1960s; Keith Macgregor, who photographed Hong Kong throughout the 1970s and 1980s; and Birdy Chu, whose photographs document Kai Tak Airport and the aircraft departing from it. Their work continues to resonate with audiences because it evokes personal memories of a city that is constantly evolving, preserving moments that might otherwise be lost to time.
Continuing this exploration of memory and Hong Kong, on the first Sunday of September, we will invite local photographer Hang Tam to the gallery to present two photobooks: It really is Kwun Tong? and Hello! Do You Remember Me?
Treasure-hunt
Photographer Hang Tam will guide readers through his photobook, It really is Kwun Tong?, which is presented in the unique form of a silver box. Opening the box begins a treasure-hunt-like experience, with maps, letters, receipts, and a large collection of photographs that together lead readers on a visual journey through Kwun Tong.
It really Is Kwun Tong? begins with the photographer’s personal story, taking readers back to the Kowloon neighbourhood in the 1970s — formerly written as “Kwun Tong / 官塘” — and tracing the transformation of the same place across four decades. The project is also a “father-and-son collaboration” across time and space, bringing two generations together through images. It reveals how photographs, as fragments of memory, can travel across time and enter into dialogue with viewers once again.
A Paper Telephone Booth
Hang Tam’s latest work, Hello! Do You Remember Me? was shortlisted for the Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award at Les Rencontres d’Arles in France. Inspired by Hong Kong’s collective memories of public telephone booths and old Yellow Pages directories, the work is a photobook conceived as an object of urban archaeology.
In the book, Hang interweaves images of public telephone booths, old telephone directories, and telecommunication objects from bygone eras with familiar lines from popular films, evoking the romance of an earlier age of communication. Once, people would step into public telephone booths to have private conversations, temporarily separated from the world around them. In an age when communication is more immediate and accessible than ever, what remains of that desire for connection? Hello! Do You Remember Me? becomes an old telephone booth on paper — a piece of paper architecture that can be opened, entered, and read.
The Handmade Photobooks
Together, It really is Kwun Tong? and Hello! Do You Remember Me? explore the idea that a photobook is not merely a vessel for images, but can also exist as an independent art object in its own right. Both works move beyond the documentary function of archival photographs and old telephone directories, transforming these materials into creative forms. They reflect on the layered memories of individuals, communities, families, and places, while also exploring the relationship between photographic images and book form, and the creative possibilities of incorporating elements of popular culture.
At the event, Hang Tam will share his creative process and sign books for readers. A limited number of handmade editions will also be available for purchase on site.
Whether you are interested in Hong Kong’s collective memory, photography, or book design, this is a rare opportunity to encounter these two photobooks with the photographer himself. We look forward to seeing you.

A 40-Year Dialogue Between Father and Son
This is Hang Tam’s tenth photobook and a deeply personal handmade publication.
The project began when Tam discovered photographs taken by his late father in Kwun Tong (formerly “Kwun Tong / 官塘”) during the 1970s. By coincidence, forty years later in the 2010s, Tam himself had documented the same district just before large-scale redevelopment reshaped the area.
The number “40” marks both the time gap between the two bodies of work and a symbolic turning point in the artist’s own life. The book becomes a cross-generational collaboration—a conversation across time between father and son.
A Box of Living History
More than a printed volume, the work is conceived as a tactile archive:
Box size approximately 96mm x 70mm x 45mm
65 photographic prints
Reproductions of 1970s Kwun Tong rental receipts
A vintage map
A piece of fabric
Letters in Chinese and English
Each edition rearranges images and poetic captions differently, reinforcing the openness of memory and interpretation.
The title—It really is Kwun Tong ?—expresses both disbelief and longing. Faced with the district’s transformation after 2022, the question resonates as a shared reflection between two generations confronting irreversible urban change.

A Paper Architecture of the Telephone Booth
Hang Tam’s eleventh handmade photobook transforms Hong Kong’s collective memory of public telephone booths and the iconic Yellow Pages directory into a sculptural publication.
The book was shortlisted for the Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award Arles (Les Rencontres d’Arles, France).
One of the book’s most intimate gestures is Tam’s pencil rubbings of old Hong Kong coins printed within the pages—an evocation of the tactile ritual of inserting coins to make a phone call.
The artist poses a quiet yet piercing question:
“If you had one coin in your hand, would you call me?”
Photographs of phone booths, directories, and mobile devices are interwoven with Cantonese monologues—echoing the murmurs of someone speaking into a receiver. In an age of instant messaging, the work reflects on a paradox: as communication becomes faster, listening becomes rarer.
The disappearing telephone booth is reimagined here as a book—an architectural space that can be opened, held, and revisited.
